According to the concept of the defined benefits plan, the nature and level of benefits are defined in the regulations in percent of a reference value (e.g. the insured remuneration), and - from this - the level of contributions is determined (see also defined contributions plan). Changes in the reference value usually require separate (additional) financing.

According to the concept of the defined contributions plan, the level of contributions is fixed in the regulations depending on a defined reference value (e.g. insured salary) and the level of the resulting benefits are determined from this (see also defined benefits plan).

Positive difference between accumulated actuarial reserves and actual benefit entitlements as stipulated in the regulations, which falls to the pension fund.

Non-compulsory survivors' benefits for the surviving partner of an insured person, if the regulations provide for this.
